Sa'adat: Hunger strike restored unity in prisons -
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) —Jailed leftist leader Ahmad Sa’adat on Monday said the mass prisoner hunger strike had restored unity among detainees.
Around 2,000 prisoners ended a month-long hunger strike on May 15 after Israeli authorities agreed to their demands, which included the release of detainees from solitary confinement.
Saadat, secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was released from solitary confinement after spending three years in isolation in Shatta prison.
He met with Ashraf al-Khateeb, a lawyer from the Ramallah-based prisoners ministry, and said the strike deal was an achievement for all Palestinians, a ministry statement said.
The deal set the stage for a new era of cohesion between prisoners and an end to factional divides, Sa’adat said, adding that prisoners from all parties support efforts for national reconciliation.
The road to freedom is long and requires unity and determination, Sa’adat said.
